Dream debut for Danny Green as he helps United to come from behind to get to the quarterfinals

Updated: Dec 14, 2022

A second-half comeback saw Hayes & Yeading United progress to the quarterfinals of the Middlesex Senior Cup beating Hampton & Richmond Borough 3-1 away from home.

As with any cup game Hayes & Yeading manager Paul Hughes took the time to make some changes to his starting eleven.

Regular starters in the form of Charlie Wassmer, Taylor Miles, Hassan Jalloh and Sanmi Odelusi for this one with Amos Nasha taking the captain’s armband and a debut for newly signed Danny Green.

At the beginning of the game, United was quick to dominate possession. However, this all changed just nine minutes into the game with a counterattack from Hampton.

The ball was swung in from the right to Connor Jurran-Browne, with great accuracy he fired the ball past a diving Dan Wilks into the far corner of the net giving Hampton & Richmond Borough the lead.

This did not stop United, as they continued to dominate possession, this led to United having their first decent chance of the game at the 15-minute mark.

Cameron Green played the ball to the foot of Reece Cole, who struck it cleanly 20 yards out, on loan, QPR goalkeeper Matteo Salamon managed to leap like a salmon and tip the ball wide of the post.

The pressure did not stop there for Hayes and Yeading, with another chance being created, but this time it was a free kick 25 yards out to be taken once again by Cole.

Similar to the chance earlier the goalkeeper managed to get a touch on it, but the travelling supporters, were not too fond as the referee gave a goal kick instead of a corner.

The first half ended with United trailing Hampton & Richmond by one goal.

United did make a change at halftime, with Moses Emmanuel who has been in good form for United scoring two goals in his last two games, being replaced by newly signed Aaron Alleyne-Anstey.

Hayes and Yeading started once again off strong, dominating the possession all around the pitch. Six minutes into the second half United were losing no more.

Once again Reece Cole found himself with acres of space around 20 yards out and let one fly. The Ball took a huge deflection and left the keeper rooted down on the spot as the flight path of the ball changed to smash into the back of the net levelling the score at 1-1.

Ten minutes later former United player Francis Amartey took to the field for Hampton and got a cheer from the away fans as a mark of respect for his service to the club.

74 minutes in the deadlock was broken as Danny Green slide in to score on his debut giving United the lead in the final 15 minutes of the game.

Reece Cole has had a splendid game with once again a free kick from 25 yards out just tipped over the bar by Matteo Salamon in arguably the best save of the game.

Just as the clock hit 90 minutes Hampton’s chance at progressing to the quarterfinals was crushed as Adam Liddle basted the ball into the roof of the net which was like his goal on Saturday.

With Hayes and Yeading going through to the quarterfinals, this sets up a tie against neighbours Southall at home. This game will be a tough challenge for United who hope to progress to the semi-finals.
